Welcome to the Stained Glass Studio

The Studio

The Stained Glass Studio, situated in the Chiltern Hills, is halfway between London and Oxford. It was established by J. E. Nuttgens in 1939 near the workshops of Eric Gill, who was an important influence on his work. J. E. Nuttgens studied with Karl Parsons at The Central School of Arts & Crafts and another formative influence was Christopher Whall. Working for Paul Woodroffe in the 1920’s took him to Chipping Camden and the Arts & Crafts Movement. His methods were traditional, using mouth-blown ‘antique’ glass, painted with oxide glass paints, silver (yellow) stain, enamels and acid etch. These continue to provide the basis of the work today and have been proven by artists like Chagall, Matisse and, in Coventry Cathedral, by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens, whose partnership began in this studio.
